Ever heard of the human pacifier? Yes human pacifier. That is one challenge us breastfeeding mothers may have to face with our babies. Pacifiers can leave many mothers puzzled. Before my daughter was born, I brought the Soothie pacifiers because I thought that since the hospitals give them to every newborn then they will suit my daughter just fine. I even picked them out because they are suppose to not cause nipple confusion for a breastfeeding baby.
Breast feeding mothers are always recommended not to give the baby a pacifier until breastfeeding is well established. In some cases this is true but I think that if you wait to long, the baby may not even want to try out a pacifier. But that's just my opinion because of my experiences with my three month old. Babies need sucking satisfaction especially when they are so young. When a baby is being breastfed, most of the time they eat and sometimes they just play with the nipple. This is why they explain to you in childbirth classes and breastfeeding class how to know when your baby is getting milk.
Now to be realistic getting your baby to take a pacifier does not depend on how cute they are and much they cost. It depends on your baby. The baby calls the shots on this one. Trust me when I tell you I have brought every pacifier you can think of and I need to get it through my head that maybe my daughter just doesn't like them at all. I even tried putting a little milk on it to see if she would take it but all she did was suck it for two seconds when the milk was gone, she spit it out.
So as mothers we have to give our babies what they want but I need to find a way to retire as a human pacifier which will be hard because I still have nine more months of breastfeeding.
